Womens Roller Derby Arrives in the UK

An exciting retro sport involving girls in saucy fancy dress on roller skates is making its debut in the UK! Roller derby lived many reincarnations since its inception the 1930s and has returned with a nod to burlesque and DIY punk rock ethics. The London Rollergirls are the first ever UK womens roller derby league. Hot on the heels of a grass-roots revival in the US, Canada, Australia, NZ & Germany the London Rollergirls are taking the UK by storm.
The idea for formation of a league in the UK came from Danielle West aka Cyclone Bea and Lauren Langston aka Sugrrr Cain who developed the idea earlier this year after meeting at a cage fighting gym. They have worked on building up leagues membership through word of mouth, recruitment flyers, networking web sites such as myspace.com and the leagues own website: http://www.londonrollergirls.com
Following the success of their first ever fundraising event held at South London Pacific, the girls are lacing up their skates but abandoning their fishnets for a more tropical themed event! On Sunday 27th August 2006 the London Rollergirls are hosting a luau at South London Pacific! The evening will enable guests to watch film clips of derby girls in action, learn to Hula Dance, enjoy a tantalizing bellydance performance, go low with a Hula Limbo and meet or join the London Rollergirls League.
